vomiting, dehydration, hypotension, and sudden death due to very large sodium losses from the body (salt wasting). It may be seen in abnormal losses of sodium into the urine (as in congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenocortical insufficiency, or one of the forms of salt-losing nephropathy) or in large extrarenal sodium losses, usually from the gastrointestinal tract. Called also salt-depletion or salt-losing crisis and salt-losing defect.
