white, thick patches on the oral mucosa produced by hyperkeratosis of the epithelium, with thickening of stratified squamous epithelium, hyperkeratosis, hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltration, and degeneration of epithelial cells. It is a benign condition but may predispose to development of epidermoid carcinoma. The etiology is unknown, but tobacco use has been implicated (see stomatitis nicotina). Called also keratosis linguae, leukokeratosis, psoriasis buccalis, and psoriasis linguae.
