linkage map
A map of the relative positions of genes (or other DNA sequences) on a chromosome, determined on the basis of how frequently the genes are inherited together. The closer two genes are, the less likely it is that recombination will separate them during the formation of sex cells (sperm or egg).

linkage d.
the occurrence in a population of two linked alleles at a frequency higher (or lower) than the expected equilibrium frequency (which is the product of the frequencies of the two alleles).

linkage e.
in genetics, the situation in which the coupling and repulsion phases for two linked loci are equally frequent, so that the frequency of each combination of alleles is equal to the product of their individual frequencies.

linking n.
in topology (def. 3), the total number of times one strand of the DNA double helix winds around the other in a right hand direction, given a DNA molecule with constrained ends. Two molecules differing only in linking number are topoisomers.
