freeze To collapse the stack of operators applied to an object. This discards the object's construction history and keeps only the current values for the object. You can no longer go back and change the parameters of the individual operators that were applied. However, the object requires less memory and computation time for updates. See also Operator.

free induction decay (FID) - if transverse magnetization of the spins is produced, eg by a 90?pulse, a transient NMR signal will result that will decay toward zero with a characteristic time constant T2 (or T2*); this decaying signal is the FID. In practice, the first part of the FID is not observable due to residual effects of the powerful exciting RF pulse on the electronics of the receiver.

free radical a radical in its uncombined state; an atom or atom group carrying an unpaired electron and no charge (usually an oxygen molecule). Free radicals are very reactive and unstable and do not stay in this transient state for very long. Free radicals react with cell components, stealing their electrons and thus creating more free radicals and causing damage.
