The allantoic vesicle expands into the coelom and fuses with serosa to become a vascular exchange membrane called the chorioallantois. Gaseous exchange will occur through this membrane rather than through the yolk sac. The chorioallantois has an endodermal lining and mesodermal covering.

The cellular, outermost extraembryonic membrane, composed of trophoblast lined with mesoderm. It develops villi about two weeks after fertilization. Villi are the threadlike projections growing in tufts on the external surface of the chorion. At three weeks, it is vascularized by allantoic vessels.

The chorion develops chorionic villi, which are finger-like projections on its surface. The chorionic villi extend downward through the uterine lining into the maternal blood supply to help supply the developing embryo with oxygen and nutrients.
