| autoimmune t. |
1. any of various types of thyroiditis characterized by the presence of Askanazy cells and autoantibodies that destroy the gland and cause hypothyroidism; they may occur in any age or sex but particularly affect middle-aged to elderly women. A distinction is made between types with goiter (Hashimoto's disease) and those without goiter (atrophic or atrophic autoimmune thyroiditis). Riedel's thyroiditis is a less common type, and Graves' disease is a closely related condition. 2. Hashimoto's disease. 3. any of various experimental animal models of thyroiditis.
