shellac A natural resin that is secreted by the Lac insect and deposited on trees. It is collected, purified and used for industrial purposes and for body care or as hair spray. In the '40s and '50s one could always tell who used a hair spray with shellac in it because their hair-dos formed perfect hard shapes unflappable in the wind and sent out little dandruff puffs of flakes throughout the evening. I read that now in the '90s shellac-based hair sprays do not flake (which I sincerely doubt). ...
