Sanger (1883-1966) US nurse in New York slums, where she was appalled at deaths of poor women from self-induced abortions. She coined the term birth control and founded National Birth Control League in 1914. When she opened a birth-control clinic in Brooklyn in 1916, she was arrested for creating a public nuisance.
