Short for MAchine Readable Cataloging, MARC is a format developed by the Library of Congress identifying the data elements inside a bibliographic, authority, holdings, or other type of record for input, output, storage, and computer manipulation. The newest version of the MARC Format, released in late 1999, is the MARC21 Format, in which the differences between the USMARC and Canadian MARC Formats have been eliminated.
