typhus vaccine A formaldehyde-inactivated suspension of Rickettsia prowazekii grown in embryonated eggs; effective against louse-borne (epidemic) typhus; primary immunization consists of two subcutaneous injections 4 or more weeks apart; booster doses are required every 6 to 12 months, as long as the possibility of exposure exists. A vaccine containing living rickettsiae of an attenuated strain of R. Prowazekii has also been used.
(05 Mar 2000)
yellow fever vaccine A living, attenuated strain (17D) of yellow fever virus propagated in embryonated fowl eggs.
A suspension of dried mouse brain infected with French neurotropic (Dakar) strain of yellow fever virus, administered topically by the scratch method; not officially recommended in the United States because of meningoencephalitic reactions.
(05 Mar 2000)
Flury strain vaccine An inactivated virus vaccine, used for preexposure immunization to persons at high risk of exposure, e.g., veterinarians, and in conjunction with rabies immunoglobulin, for postexposure prophylaxis. The official preparation is human diploid cell vaccine produced from rabies virus grown in cultures of human diploid embryo lung cells and inactivated with propriolactone. It has a much lower incidence of adverse reactions than the previously used duck embryo vaccine.
(12 Dec 1998)
flu vaccine The flu (influenza) vaccine is recommended for persons at high risk for serious complications from influenza infection, including everyone 65 or over; people with chronic diseases of the heart, lung or kidneys, diabetes, immunosuppression, or severe forms of anaemia; residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities, children and teenagers on long-term aspirin therapy (and who may therefore be at risk for developing Reye syndrome after an influenza infection), and those in close or frequent contact with anyone at high risk. Persons with an allergy to eggs should not receive influenza vaccine.
(12 Dec 1998)
live oral poliovirus vaccine Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), an aqueous suspension of inactivated strains of poliomyelitis virus (types 1, 2, and 3) used by injection; has largely been replaced by the oral vaccine.
See: Salk vaccine.
(05 Mar 2000)
live vaccine Vaccine prepared from living, attenuated organisms.
(05 Mar 2000)
low-egg-passage vaccine See: rabies vaccine, Flury strain egg-passage.
(05 Mar 2000)
abelson leukaemia virus A defective murine leukaemia virus capable of transforming lymphoid cells and producing a rapidly progressing lymphoid leukaemia after superinfection with friend, moloney, or rauscher virus.
(12 Dec 1998)
Abelson murine leukaemia virus A retrovirus belonging to the Type C retrovirus group subfamily (family Oncovirinae) which is associated with leukaemia and produces in vitro transformation of mouse cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
adeno-associated virus <virology> A genus of viruses in the family Parvoviridae which are all defective viruses (unable to replicate by themselves) and depend on the co-infection of their host cell by other, nondefective viruses to help them replicate.
(09 Oct 1997)
adenoidal-pharyngeal-conjunctival virus <virology> An icosahedral (20-sided) virus that contains DNA, there are over 40 different adenovirus varieties, some of which cause the common cold.
(10 May 1997)
adenosatellite virus <virology> A genus of viruses in the family Parvoviridae which are all defective viruses (unable to replicate by themselves) and depend on the co-infection of their host cell by other, nondefective viruses to help them replicate.
(09 Oct 1997)
african horse sickness virus A species of orbivirus that causes disease in horses, mules, and donkeys.
(12 Dec 1998)
african swine fever virus The lone species of the genus african swine fever-like viruses. The virus causes a fatal disease among domestic pigs in africa and a less virulent infection in europe. The virus is present in soft ticks (ornithodoros moubata), warthogs, or domestic pigs. Originally listed as a species of iridoviridae, the virus exhibits some similarities to poxviridae but its differences warranted placement in a separate genus of an, as yet unknown, family.
(12 Dec 1998)
AIDS-related virus An obsolete term for human immunodeficiency virus.
