The part of a mine that supports the strata above an opening in the mine. For example, (1) the weight of the rock above a narrow roadway is transferred to the solid ore/muck along the sides, which act as abutments of the arch of strata spanning the roadway; (2) the weight of the rock over a longwall face is transferred to the front abutment (the solid ore/muck ahead of the face) and the back abutment (the caved and settled material behind the face).
