| transverse ligament of the atlas | Thick, strong, centrally flattened band spanning the vertebral foramen of the atlas as it extends from the medial aspect of one lateral mass to the other, passing dorsal to the dens with which it articulates; it forms the dorsal portion of the opening for the dens, tightly embracing its neck. It forms a part of the "cross-bar" of the cruciform ligament of the atlas. See: cruciform ligament of atlas. Synonym: ligamentum transversum atlantis, Lauth's ligament, transverse atlantal ligament. | transverse lines of sacrum | One of four ridges that cross the pelvic surface of the sacrum; these mark the positions of the intervertebral disks between the bodies of the five sacral vertebrae in the immature bone. Synonym: lineae transversa ossi sacri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse metacarpal ligament | <anatomy> The ligament that interconnects the palmar surface of the heads of the second to fifth metacarpals, being continuous with the palmar ligaments on palmar plates; it lies in the plane of the palmar interosseous fascia. Synonym: ligamentum metacarpale transversum profundum, transverse metacarpal ligament. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse metatarsal ligament | <anatomy> The ligament that interconnects the plantar surface of the heads of the metatarsals, being continuous with the plantar ligaments. Synonym: ligamentum metatarsale transversum profundum, transverse metatarsal ligament. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse muscle of abdomen | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, seventh to twelfth costal cartilages, lumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inguinal ligament; insertion, xiphoid cartilage and linea alba and, through the conjoint tendon, pubic tubercle and pecten; action, compresses abdominal contents; nerve supply, lower thoracic. Synonym: musculus transversus abdominis, musculus transversalis abdominis, transverse muscle of abdomen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse muscle of auricle | <anatomy> A band of sparse muscular fibres on the cranial surface of the auricle, extending from the eminence of the concha to the eminence of the scapha. Synonym: musculus transversus auriculae, transverse muscle of auricle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse muscle of chin | <anatomy> Inconstant fibres of the depressor anguli oris musculus continue into the neck and cross to the opposite side inferior to the chin. Synonym: musculus transversus menti, transverse muscle of chin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse muscle of nape | <anatomy> An occasional muscle passing between the tendons of the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, possibly a fasciculus of the posterior auricular muscle. Synonym: musculus transversus nuchae, transverse muscle of nape. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse muscle of thorax | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, dorsal surface of xiphoid cartilage and lower portion of dorsal surface of body of sternum; insertion, second to sixth costal cartilages; action, contributes to depression of ribs, narrowing chest; nerve supply, intercostal. Synonym: musculus transversus thoracis, musculus triangularis sterni, sternocostalis muscle, transverse muscle of thorax. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse muscle of tongue | An intrinsic muscle of the tongue, the fibres of which arise from the septum and radiate to the dorsum and sides; action, decreases lateral dimension of the tongue; nerve supply, hypoglossal for motor, lingual for sensory. Synonym: musculus transversus linguae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse myelitis | An inflammatory process involving both gray and white matter of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
