Sulfur plays an important role in the synthesis of proteins and helps boost an African Violet's resistance to disease. In addition to its function in plant nutrition, sulfur is also used as an elemental pesticide to treat fungi.

It is thought to exacerbate many respiratory diseases, including asthma. Sulfur dioxide is produced whenever sulfur-containing compounds are burnt. Its commonest source in Australia is power-stations burning coal containing slight sulfur impurities.
