| lateral great muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, lateral lip of linea aspera as far as great trochanter; insertion, tibial tuberosity by way of common tendon of quadriceps femoris and patellar ligament; action, extends leg; nerve supply, femoral. Synonym: musculus vastus lateralis, lateral great muscle, lateral vastus muscle, musculus vastus externus. (05 Mar 2000) |

| lateral ground bundle | lateral ground bundle |
| lateral group of axillary lymph nodes | Lymph nodes along the brachial vein that receive lymph drainage from most of the free superior limb and send efferent vessels to the central group of axillary lymph nodes. Synonym: nodi lymphatici brachiales, brachial lymph nodes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral head | Head of origin farthest from the midline. Nomina Anatomica lists lateral heads (caput laterale...) of the following: 1) triceps brachii muscle (... Musculi tricipitis brachii ); 2) gastrocnemius muscle (... Musculi gastrocnemii ). Synonym: caput laterale. (05 Mar 2000) |

| lateral horn | The small lateral gray column of the spinal cord as appearing in transverse section containing the interomedial cell column. See: gray columns. Synonym: cornu laterale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral humeral epicondylitis | <rheumatology> Inflammation at the lateral epicondyle (bony process of the humerus) of the elbow and the tendons insertions. It has earned the name tennis elbow because of the common occurrence of this condition in tennis players (constant dorsiflexion of the wrist). See: medial epicondylitis. (13 Jan 1998) |
| lateral hypothalamic area | Extends throughout most of the rostrocaudal extent of the hypothalamus lateral to the column of the fornix; includes lateral tuberal nuclei, tuberomamillary nuclei, and diffuse populations of cells. Synonym: lateral hypothalamic area. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral hypothalamic region | Extends throughout most of the rostrocaudal extent of the hypothalamus lateral to the column of the fornix; includes lateral tuberal nuclei, tuberomamillary nuclei, and diffuse populations of cells. Synonym: lateral hypothalamic area. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral illumination | Illumination in which a beam of light is directed diagonally to an object so that it is brilliantly illuminated while the surrounding area is in shadow. Synonym: lateral illumination, oblique illumination. Kohler illumination, a method of illumination of microscopic objects in which the image of the light source is focused on the substage condenser diaphragm and the diaphragm of the light source is focused in the same plane with the object to be observed; maximises both the brightness and uniformity of the illuminated field. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral incisor | Second maxillary or mandibular permanent or deciduous tooth on either side of the midsagittal plane of the head. Synonym: lateral incisor. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral inferior genicular artery | <anatomy, artery> Origin, popliteal; distribution, knee joint; anastomoses, lateral superior genicular and anterior tibial recurrent (and posterior); i.e., articular vascular network of knee. Synonym: arteria genus inferior lateralis, lateral inferior genicular artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral inguinal fossa | A depression on the peritoneal surface of the anterior abdominal wall lateral to the ridge formed by the inferior epigastric artery; it corresponds to the position of the deep inguinal ring, and is the site of an indirect inguinal hernia. Synonym: fossa inguinalis lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral inhibition | A simple form of information processing. The classic example is found in the eye, whereby ganglion cells are stimulated if photoreceptors in a well defined field are illuminated, but their response is inhibited if neighbouring photoreceptors are excited (an on field/off surround cell) or vice versa an off field/on surround cell. The effect of lateral inhibition is to produce edge or boundary sensitive cells and to reduce the amount of information that is sent to higher centres, a form of peripheral processing. (18 Nov 1997) |
| lateral jugular lymph nodes | Nodes of the lateral deep cervical group lying lateral to the internal jugular vein; they usually empty into the jugular trunk. Synonym: nodi lymphatici jugulares laterales. (05 Mar 2000) |
