Beam Width: The angle of the transmitted (and/or received) sonar beam in the along-track (transverse) dimension, often between 0.1 and 2.5 degrees for side scan sonar. Narrow horizontal beamwidths increase transverse resolution. However, a more stable towbody is required to maintain distortion free data. Because beamwidth is related to transducer length and frequency, beamwidth decreases with increasing frequency for a given transducer length.
