| genus |
A numerical integer invariant of an algebraic curve. As applied to a topological object such as 2-dimensional manifold, it can be interpreted as the number of "handles" the object has. Eg a sphere has genus 0, while a torus (donut shape) has genus 1. There are various other definitions, such as the dimension of the space of differential (1-)forms.
