| foramen stylomastoideum | The distal or external opening of the facial canal on the inferior surface of the petrous portion of the temporal bone, between the styloid and mastoid processes; it transmits the facial nerve and stylomastoid artery. Synonym: foramen stylomastoideum. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| foramen subseptale | In the embryonic heart, the temporary opening between right and left atria situated between the lower margin of the septum primum and the atrioventricular canal cushions, in an adult heart, the abnormal persistence of the so-named communication which is normal in young embryos. Synonym: foramen subseptale, ostium primum, primary interatrial foramen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen supraorbitale | A foramen in the supraorbital margin of the frontal bone at the junction of the medial and intermediate thirds. Synonym: foramen supraorbitale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen thyroideum | An opening occasionally existing in one or both of the plates of the thyroid cartilage. Synonym: foramen thyroideum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen transversarium | Foramen processus transversus. Synonym: foramen processus transversi, foramen transversarium, foramen vertebroarterialis, foramen of transverse process, vertebroarterial foramen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen venae cavae | An opening in the right lobe of the central tendon of the diaphragm which transmits the inferior vena cava and branches of the right phrenic nerve. Synonym: foramen venae cavae, foramen of vena cava, foramen quadratum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen venosum | <anatomy> A minute inconstant foramen in the greater wing of the sphenoid bone, anterior and medial to the foramen ovale, transmitting a small emissary vein from the cavernous sinus. Synonym: emissary sphenoidal foramen, venous foramen, Vesalius' foramen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen vertebrale | The foramen formed by the union of the vertebral arch with the body; in the articulated vertebral column, the vertebral foramen collectively form the vertebral column. Synonym: foramen vertebrale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen vertebroarterialis | Foramen processus transversus. Synonym: foramen processus transversi, foramen transversarium, foramen vertebroarterialis, foramen of transverse process, vertebroarterial foramen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen zygomaticofaciale | The opening on the lateral surface of the zygomatic bone below the orbital margin that transmits the zygomaticofacial nerve. Synonym: foramen zygomaticofaciale, malar foramen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen zygomatico-orbitale | The common opening on the orbital surface of the zygomatic bone of the canals transmitting the zygomaticofacial and zygomaticotemporal nerves; sometimes each of these canals has a separate opening on the orbital surface. Synonym: foramen zygomatico-orbitale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen zygomaticotemporale | The opening, on the temporal surface of the zygomatic bone, of the canal that gives passage to the zygomaticotemporal nerve. Synonym: foramen zygomaticotemporale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| frontal foramen | An occasional small opening in the supraorbital margin of the frontal bone medial to the supraorbital foramen. Synonym: foramen frontale. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Aarskog-Scott syndrome | A syndrome of ocular hypertelorism, anteverted nostrils, broad upper lip, saddle-bag scrotum, and laxity of ligaments resulting in genu recurvatum, flat feet, and hyperextensible fingers; X-linked and autosomal dominant forms. Synonym: Aarskog-Scott syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Aarskog syndrome | <syndrome> Grier et al. (1983) reported father and 2 sons with typical Aarskog syndrome, including short stature, hypertelorism, and shawl scrotum. They tabulated the findings in 82 previous cases. X-linked recessive inheritance has been repeatedly suggested. The family reported by Welch (1974) had affected males in 3 consecutive generations. Thus, there is either genetic heterogeneity or this is an autosomal dominant with strong sex-influence and possibly ascertainment bias resulting from use of the shawl scrotum as a main criterion. Stretchable skin was present in the cases of Grier et al. (1983). Teebi et al. (1993) reported the case of an affected mother and 4 sons (including a pair of monozygotic twins) by 2 different husbands. They suggested that the manifestations were as severe in the mother as in the sons and that this suggested autosomal dominant inheritance. Actually, the mother seemed less severely affected, compatible with X-linked inheritance. Clinical signs: Mild to moderate short stature, normocephaly, Widow's peak hair, maxillary hypoplasia, broad nasal bridge, anteverted nostrils, long philtrum, broad upper lip, curved linear dimple below the lower lip, hypertelorism, ptosis, down-slanted palpebral fissures, ophthalmoplegia, strabismus, hyperopic astigmatism, large cornea, floppy ears, lop-ears,cleft lip/palate, shawl scrotum, saddle-bag scrotum, cryptorchidism, brachydactyly, digital contractures, clinodactyly, mild syndactyly, transverse palmar crease, lymphoedema of the feet, ligamentous laxity, osteochondritis dissecans, proximal finger joint hyperextensibility, flexed distal finger joints, genu recurvatum, flat feet, stretchable skin, cervical spine hypermobility, odontoid anomaly, macrocytic anaemia, hemochromatosis, hepatomegaly, portal cirrhosis, imperforate anus, rectoperineal fistula, interstitial pulmonary disease, sternal deformity. Inheritance: Sex-influenced autosomal dominant form, also X-linked form. (05 Aug 1998) |
