nerve root One of the two bundles of nerve fibres (dorsal and ventral roots) emerging from the spinal cord that join to form a single segmental (mixed) spinal nerve; some of the cranial nerves are similarly formed by the union of two roots, in particular the fifth or trigeminal nerve; in the case of the eighth cranial (vestibulocochlear) nerve, each of its two components (vestibular root and cochlear root) is referred to as a root even though they do not join each other and their central connections are distinctive, conjoined nerve root, two adjacent nerve root's with the same common origin from the dura mater.
(05 Mar 2000)
nerve root sleeve In myelography, the funnel-shaped extension of the opacified subarachnoid space that surrounds each nerve root as it enters its neural foramen.
(05 Mar 2000)
stilted root Adventitious aerial roots arising from the trunk and branches, presumably providing support to the plant.
(09 Oct 1997)
superior root of ansa cervicalis The fibres that arise from the first and second cervical nerves, accompany the hypoglossal nerve, then branch off to meet the inferior root in the ansa cervicalis; they innervate the infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: descendens hypoglossi, descending branch of hypoglossal nerve, radix superior ansae cervicalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
superior root of vestibulocochlear nerve Radix vestibularis, radix superior nervi vestibulocochlearis, superior root of vestibulocochlear nerve, vestibular root of vestibulocochlear nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
sympathetic root of ciliary ganglion Postganglionic fibres, having cell bodies in the superior cervical ganglion, branching from the carotid plexus passing through the ciliary ganglion without synapse to reach the eyeball.
Synonym: radix sympathica ganglii ciliaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior root of ansa cervicalis Fibres from the second and third cervical nerves that pass forward and downward along the internal jugular vein; they contribute to the ansa cervicalis and innervate the infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: descendens cervicalis, radix inferior ansae cervicalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior root of vestibulocochlear nerve <anatomy, nerve> One of the components of the vestibulocochlear nerve; it is made up of the central processes of the bipolar neurons which compose the spiral (cochlear) ganglion in the spiral canal of the modiolus of the bony cochlea; the cochlear root enters the cranial cavity by passing in fascicles through the spiral foraminous tract at the bottom of the internal auditory meatus; it enters the brainstem through the pontomedullary groove, closely adhering to the caudoventral aspect of the vestibular root, and distributes its fibres to the ventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei in the floor of the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle.
Synonym: radix cochlearis, cochlear root of vestibulocochlear nerve, inferior root of vestibulocochlear nerve, radix inferior nervi vestibulocochlearis.
(05 Mar 2000)
oculomotor root of ciliary ganglion A branch of the oculomotor nerve supplying parasympathetic preganglionic nerve fibres to the ciliary ganglion.
Synonym: radix parasympathica ganglii ciliaris, radix oculomotoria ganglii ciliaris, motor root of ciliary ganglion, oculomotor root of ciliary ganglion, radix brevis ganglii ciliaris, short root of ciliary ganglion.
(05 Mar 2000)
orizaba jalap root The dried root of Ipomoea orizabensis (family Convolvulaceae).
See: ipomea resin.
Synonym: orizaba jalap root.
Origin: G. Ips (ip-), a worm, + homoios, like
(05 Mar 2000)
tip of tooth root The tip of a tooth root, the part farthest from the incisal or occlusal side.
Synonym: apex radicis dentis, root apex, root tip.
(05 Mar 2000)
tooth root The part of a tooth from the neck to the apex, embedded in the alveolar process and covered with cementum. A root may be single or divided into several branches, usually identified by their relative position, e.g., lingual root or buccal root. Single-rooted teeth include mandibular first and second premolars and the maxillary second premolar teeth. The maxillary first premolar has two roots in most cases. Maxillary molars have three roots.
(12 Dec 1998)
tooth root sensitivities Oversensitivity of exposed roots of teeth to cold, hot, and sour foods because those roots are no longer protected by healthy gum and bone. Chronic gum disease contributes to toothache due to root sensitivities. The roots are the lower 2/3 of the teeth that are normally buried in bone. The bacterial toxins dissolve the bone around the roots and cause the gum and the bone to recede, exposing the roots. The sensitivities may be so severe that the person avoids any cold or sour foods.
(12 Dec 1998)
tuberous root A root that is swollen for food storage; tuberous primary root's occur in aconite, beet, and carrot; tuberous secondary root's occur in plants of the Umbelliferae; and tuberous adventitious roots occur in jalap and sweet potato.
(05 Mar 2000)
jaundice root The dried rhizome of Hydrastis canadensis (family Ranunculaceae), a native of the eastern U.S.; formerly used in the treatment of chronic catarrhal states of the mucous membranes and in metrorrhagia.
Synonym: golden seal, jaundice root, yellow root.
