cavernous body of penis One of two parallel columns of erectile tissue forming the dorsal part of the body of the penis; they are separated posteriorly, forming the crura of the penis.
Synonym: cavernous body of penis.
(05 Mar 2000)
glass body A circular body of extreme transparency except for a crescentic punctate substance on one edge which contains haemoglobin. The body is much larger than a red blood cell, but is thought possibly to be a degenerated red blood cell swollen by imbibition; it has been found in malaria and in convalescence from typhoid fever; the transparent portion is called the glass body.
(05 Mar 2000)
regions of body The topographical divisions of the body.
Synonym: regiones corporis.
(05 Mar 2000)
glomus body 1. A small globular body.
2. A highly organised arteriolovenular anastomosis forming a tiny nodular focus in the nailbed, pads of the fingers and toes, ears, hands, and feet and many other organs of the body. The afferent arteriole enters the connective tissue capsule of the glomus, becomes devoid of an internal elastic membrane, and develops a relatively thick epithelioid muscular wall and small lumen; the anastomosis may be branched and convoluted, richly innervated with sympathetic and myelinated nerves, and connected with a short, thin-walled vein that drains into a periglomic vein and then into one of the veins of the skin. The glomus functions as a shunt-or bypass-regulating mechanism in the flow of blood, temperature, and conservation of heat in the part as well as in the indirect control of the blood pressure and other functions of the circulatory system.
Synonym: glandulae glomiformes, glomiform glands, glomus body.
Synonym: glome.
Origin: L. Glomus, a ball
(05 Mar 2000)
medial geniculate body The medial one of a pair of prominent cell groups in the posteroinferior parts of the thalamus; it functions as the last of a series of processing stations along the auditory conduction pathway to the cerebral cortex, receiving the brachium of the inferior colliculus and giving rise to the auditory radiation to the auditory cortex in the superior temporal gyrus.
Synonym: corpus geniculatum mediale, corpus geniculatum internum.
(05 Mar 2000)
cell body Used in reference to neurons, the main part of the cell around the nucleus excluding long processes such as axons and dendrites.
(18 Nov 1997)
Renaut body Subperineurial structure comprised of loosely arranged and randomly oriented collagen fibres in a fine fibrillary material, seen in normal nerve as well as in certain pathologic states.
(05 Mar 2000)
vitreous body The transparent gel that fills the inner portion of the eyeball between the lens (lens, crystalline) and the retina.
(12 Dec 1998)
central body A zone of cytoplasm containing one or two centrioles but devoid of other organelles; usually located near the nucleus of a cell.
Synonym: cell centre, central body, centrosome, cinocentrum, kinocentrum, microcentrum.
Origin: cyto-+ G. Kentron, centre
(05 Mar 2000)
central fibrous body <anatomy, cardiology> The fibrous area where the leaflets of the aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves meet in the heart.
(05 Mar 2000)
peduncle of mamillary body A fascicle of nerve fibres passing to the mamillary body along the ventral surface of the midbrain; it consists of fibres that originate from the dorsal and ventral tegmental nuclei.
Synonym: pedunculus corporis mamillaris, fasciculus pedunculomamillaris, pedunculomamillary fasciculus.
(05 Mar 2000)
residual body 1. <cell biology> Secondary lysosomes containing material that cannot be digested.
2. <biology> The surplus cytoplasm shed by spermatids during their differentiation to spermatozoa. Usually the cytoplasm from several spermatids connected by cytoplasmic bridges.
3. <microbiology> Surplus cytoplasm containing pigment and left over after production of merozoites during schizogony of malaria parasites.
(18 Nov 1997)
residual body of Regaud The excess cytoplasm that separates from the spermatozoon during spermiogenesis.
(05 Mar 2000)
pedunculus of pineal body See: habenula.
(05 Mar 2000)
rest body A small mass of cytoplasm remaining after the nucleus and cytoplasm of the schizont of certain sporozoan protozoa have divided into asexual spores or merozoites.
