a bleeding disorder characterized by abnormal reduction in the elements involved in blood clotting due to their use in widespread intravascular clotting. It may be caused by any of numerous disorders; in the late stages, it is marked by profuse hemorrhaging. Called also consumption coagulopathy, defibrination syndrome, and disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome.
