| axon |
highly specialized relatively long extension (process) of a neuron used for conduction of electrical messages (ie action potentials). Axons are considerably more specialized and therefore easier to understand than other excitable tissues. They contain the "bare minimum" of ion channels necessary for excitability. Larger vertebrate axons are insulated by myelin.

| axon hillock |
swelling at the cell body when axon begins. Then the axon maintains constant diameter down its entire length. The impulse is carried from the cell body toward the axon terminal to other cells (generally).
