Jaundice can be caused by hemolysis (prehepatic jaundice), liver diseases (eg Gilberts syndrome or hepatitis) or biliar disorders (eg obstruction of the biliary tract due to gallstone or tumor, posthepatic jaundice). A yellowish tone to the skin or the whites of the eyes. Jaundice is caused by bilirubin, a breakdown product of hemoglobin, a molecule found in red blood cells. There are several reasons why bilirubin can be elevated in the bloodstream; classic causes include liver disease, gall bladder disease, use of certain drugs, and increased destruction of red blood cells.
