Argos locations are calculated by measuring the Doppler shift on PTT transmissions. The average duration of transmitter visibility by the satellite (pass duration) is ten minutes. During this time a minimum of two PTT transmissions must be received by the satellite to enable a location to be calculated.

Remember what we said about the light interacting with the target, causing properties of the light to change? When the light hits a target that is moving relative to the lidar, the frequency of the light is subtly changed. A Doppler lidar is one that can measure the relative velocity of the target. The term "Doppler" is used in honor of Christian Johann Doppler, an Austrian physicist and mathematician who first enunciated the principle known as the Doppler effect in 1842.
