dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (NADP) [EC 1.3.1.2] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the dehydrogenation of uracil and of thymine, using NADPH as an electron donor; the reaction is a step in the catabolism of pyrimidines. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive disorder, results in elevated pyrimidine levels in plasma, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid; it is manifest clinically in children by cerebral dysfunction and in adults by hypersensitivity to the drug 5-fluorouracil.

dihydrotachysterol [USP] an analogue of ergocalciferol produced upon irradiation of ergosterol; it raises serum calcium levels via stimulation of intestinal absorption of calcium and mobilization of the mineral from bone in patients lacking renal function or parathyroid hormone. It is used in the treatment of chronic hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, rickets, and osteodystrophy associated with various medical conditions such as chronic renal failure and hypoparathyroidism, and the treatment and prophylaxis of postoperative and idiopathic tetany. Administered orally.
