food poisoning caused by ingestion of meat of the European migratory quail, genus Coturnix, and marked by such symptoms as difficult breathing, impaired speech, nausea, weakness and loss of feeling in the lower limbs, and partial paralysis, and sometimes resulting in death; the causative toxin, which occurs in only some of the quail, is unidentified.
