a group of people that may share a common characteristic (ie, they live in a certain town or were born in a certain year) and who are enrolled in a study. The group have their health status followed for a period of time.

| coherent light |
Light in which all the waves have the same frequency and color and are perfectly in phase. Only lasers can produce coherent light. Laser light is coherent, fully unidirectional, [End Page 370] and made up of one or several very pure colors. These colors range from red to blue-violet and correspond to the radiation frequencies emitted by the excited electrons. Also called stimulated light.

A prospective investigation of the factors that might cause a disorder. A cohort (group) of persons who do not have the outcome of interest but who are exposed to the putative cause are compared to a cohort who are also free of the outcome but have not been exposed to the putative cause.
