| superficial layer | In a stratified structure, the outermost or topmost of the strata; the stratum nearest the surface. See: superficial layer of deep cervical fascia, superficial layer of the levator {palpebrae superioris muscle}, superficial layer of temporalis fascia. Synonym: lamina superficialis, superficial lamina. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superficial layer of deep cervical fascia | The part of the cervical fascia investing the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles and completely encircling the neck. Synonym: lamina superficialis fasciae cervicalis, investing fascia, superficial layer of deep cervical fascia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superficial layer of temporalis fascia | The superficial part of the temporal fascia attaching to the lateral surface of the zygomatic arch. Synonym: lamina superficialis fasciae temporalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superficial layer of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle | <anatomy> The superficial fibres of the levator muscle of the superior eyelid which are inserted into the skin of the superior eyelid. Synonym: lamina superficialis musculi levatoris palpebrae superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep gray layer of superior colliculus | A layer of myelinated fibres, the deepest layer of the colliculus superior, delimiting the latter from the central gray substance surrounding the cerebral aqueduct. Synonym: stratum album profundum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep layer | In a stratified structure, the stratum which lies beneath all others, furthest from the surface. See: deep layer of levator palpebrae superioris muscle}, deep layer of temporalis fascia. Synonym: lamina profunda, deep lamina. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep layer of levator palpebrae superioris muscle | <anatomy> The deeper fibres of the levator muscle of the superior eyelid which are inserted into the superior tarsal plate. Synonym: lamina profunda musculi levatoris palpebrae superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep layer of temporalis fascia | The deep part of the temporal fascia attaching to the medial surface of the zygomatic arch. Synonym: lamina profunda fasciae temporalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| suprachoroid layer | A layer of loose, pigmented connective tissue on the outer surface of the choroid, resembling and attached to the lamina fusca sclerae. Synonym: lamina suprachoroidea, ectochoroidea, suprachoroid layer, suprachoroidea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep white layer of superior colliculus | See: gray layer of superior colliculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| double layer | <physiology> The zone adjacent to a charged particle in which the potential falls effectively to zero. An excess or deficiency of electrons on the surface (charge, not to be confused with the transmembrane potential) leads to an equivalent excess of ions of the opposite charge in the surrounding fluid. For most cells, that have negative charges, there will be an excess of cations immediately adjacent to the plasma membrane and at physiological ionic strength the double layer is likely to be around 2-3 nm thick. (10 Oct 1997) |
| infragranular layer | The cellular band deep to the inner granular layer of the developing human cerebral cortex, which differentiates into the ganglionic layer and multiform layer by the sixth foetal month. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intermediate layer | The nuclear zone of the developing neural tube between the marginal layer and the ependymal layer; forms the gray matter of the central nervous system. Synonym: intermediate layer, mantle zone. (05 Mar 2000) |
