BM A fixed physical object or mark used as reference for a vertical datum. A primary bench mark is the principal (or only) mark of a group of bench marks to which the staff or ETG and datums are referred. The standard bench mark is a brass, bronze, or aluminum alloy disk 3-1/2 inches in diameter containing the owners inscription together with other individual identifying information. Bench mark disks serve simultaneously to reference both dynamical and geodetic datums.
