a form of chronic pyelonephritis characterized by enlargement of the kidney with loss of function, thickening and adhesion of the perirenal tissue and capsule, and destruction of parenchymal tissue; calculi, foam cells, granulomas, and medullary abscesses may also be seen. It is frequently associated with infection by Proteus spp.
