any of a group of streptococci that have no defined Lancefield group antigens but are not Streptococcus pneumoniae, usually α-hemolytic but sometimes nonhemolytic; they are part of the normal flora of the respiratory tract but can cause dental caries, bacterial endocarditis, and other disorders in immunocompromised hosts.
