either of two toxins closely related to the Shiga toxin, found in Shigella dysenteriae type I and some strains of Escherichia coli; they cause one type of hemolytic uremic syndrome. Humans are infected by ingesting undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk, and foods contaminated with cattle feces. Called also Shiga-like toxin.
