| ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The larger, anterolaterally-directed major terminal branch (with the dorsal primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen. Most ventral primary rami, especially those involved in the innervation of the limbs, participate in the formation of the major nerve plexuses (cervical, brachial, and lumbosacral) and lose their identities. Most in the thoracic region, however, remain separate from adjacent rami to become the intercostal and subcostal nerves. Ventral primary rami provide innervation to the anterolateral body wall and trunk. Nomina Anatomica lists ventral primary rami as "rami ventrales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium )m, and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ). Synonym: ramus ventralis nervi spinalis, anterior primary division. (05 Mar 2000) |

| lateral cutaneous branches of ventral primary ramus of thoracic spinal nerves | Branches arising in approximately the anterior axillary line at the level of the second through sixth intercostal spaces. Synonym: rami mammarii laterales nervorum intercostalium, lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves. (05 Mar 2000) |

| ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves | See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve. Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum cervicalium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral primary rami of lumbar spinal nerves | See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve. Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum lumbalium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral primary rami of sacral spinal nerves | See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve. Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum sacralium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal primary ramus of spinal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The smaller, posteriorly-directed major terminal branch (with the ventral primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen and turning abruptly posteriorly to divide into lateral and medial branches, both of which will supply the deep (true) muscles of the back. The medial branch (rami medialis ) of the dorsal primary ramus also supplies articular branches to the zygopophyseal joints and the periosteum of the vertebral arch. In the neck and upper back, the medial branch continues through the deep and superficial back muscles to supply overlying skin; in the lower back, the lateral branch does this. Nomina Anatomica lists dorsal primary rami as "rami dorsales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium ), and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ). Synonym: ramus dorsalis nervorum spinalium, ramus dorsalis, rami posteriores nervorum spinalium, dorsal branch, posterior primary division. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral | 1. Pertaining to the belly or to any venter. 2. Denoting a position more toward the belly surface than some other object of reference, same as anterior in human anatomy. Origin: L. Ventralis (18 Nov 1997) |
| ventral anterior nucleus of thalamus | The most rostral of the subdivisions of the ventral nucleus, receiving projections from the globus pallidus and projecting to the premotor and frontal cortex. Synonym: nucleus ventralis anterior thalami. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral aortas | The paired vessels ventral to the pharynx, which give rise to the aortic arches. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral border | The ventral or most forward margin of a structure. Synonym: anterior margin, ventral border. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral branch | Rami ventralis See: ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves, ventral primary rami of lumbar spinal nerves, ventral primary rami of sacral spinal nerves, ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral decubitus | Pressure sores (decubitus ulceration) occurring in ventral locations, such as the abdominal wall or the anterior surface of an extremity. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral glands | <entomology> Insect structures that originate from the ectoderm of the ventrocaudal part of the head and serve as a source of ecdysone. Synonym: peritracheal glands, prothoracic glands, thoracic glands, ventral glands. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral hernia | An abdominal incisional hernia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral horn | The anterior or frontal division of the lateral ventricle of the brain, extending forward from Monro's interventricular foramen. See: lateral ventricle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral intermediate nucleus of thalamus | The composite middle third of the ventral nucleus receiving in its various parts distinctive projections from the contralateral half of the cerebellum (by way of the superior cerebellar peduncle) and the ipsilateral globus pallidus; nearly all parts of the nucleus projects to the motor cortex. Synonym: nucleus ventralis intermedius thalami, nucleus ventralis lateralis, ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus. (05 Mar 2000) |
