a nonapeptide hormone having some properties similar to those of vasopressin and oxytocin, made in the supraoptico-neurohypophysial unit of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. It is found in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus of the human fetus but amounts in humans after birth are minute to indetectable.
