Cancer of the uterus is diagnosed based on the results of the pelvic examination, pap smear, biopsy of the uterus, and D and C procedure. (12 Dec 1998) |
| abdominal ostium of uterine tube | The fimbriated or ovarian extremity of an oviduct. Synonym: ostium abdominale tubae uterinae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ampulla of uterine tube | The wide portion of the uterine (fallopian) tube near the fimbriated extremity; it has a complexly folded mucosa with a columnar epithelium of mostly ciliated cells between which are secretory cells. Synonym: ampulla tubae uterinae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ampullary folds of uterine tube | One of the folds of mucous membrane at the fimbriated extremity of the uterine tube. Synonym: plicae ampullares tubae uterinae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior lip of uterine os | The portion of the vaginal part of the uterine cervix that bounds the ostium anteriorly intervening between the ostium and the anterior vaginal fornix. It is slightly shorter than labium posterius. Synonym: labium anterius ostii uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Baudelocque's uterine circle | A constriction located at the junction of the thinned lower uterine segment with the thick retracted upper uterine segment, resulting from obstructed labour; this is one of the classic signs of threatened rupture of the uterus. | contraction, uterine | The tightening and shortening of the uterine muscles. During labour, contractions accomplish two things: (1) they cause the cervix to thin and dilate (open); and (2) they aid the baby to descend into the birth canal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| posterior lip of uterine os | The portion of the uterine cervix that bounds the ostium posteriorly. It is slightly longer than labium anterius, intervening between the cervical canal and the posterior fornix of the vagina. Synonym: labium posterius ostii uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| primary uterine inertia | True uterine inertia, uterine inertia that occurs when the uterus fails to contract with sufficient force to effect continuous dilation or effacement of the cervix or descent or rotation of the foetal head, and when the uterus is easily indentable at the acme of contraction, secondary uterine inertia, uterine inertia that occurs when the uterine contractions are vigorous but, as a result of the exhaustion or dehydration of the patient, decrease in vigor, and the progress of labour ceases.
