a protein that occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondria of brown adipose tissue, important in nonshivering thermogenesis; it dissipates the proton gradient created by the respiratory chain, thus uncoupling oxidation from phosphorylation so that production of heat occurs instead of phosphorylation of ADP to ATP. Called also thermogenin.
