[EC 1.14.16.2] a monooxygenase that activates molecular oxygen to catalyze the hydroxylation of tyrosine to dopa; it requires the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin. The enzyme occurs in the brain and is inactivated in malignant hyperphenylalaninemia.
