symbol 1. A visible sign or representation of an idea; anything which suggests an idea or quality, or another thing, as by resemblance or by convention; an emblem; a representation; a type; a figure; as, the lion is the symbol of courage; the lamb is the symbol of meekness or patience. "A symbol is a sign included in the idea which it represents, e.g, an actual part chosen to represent the whole, or a lower form or species used as the representative of a higher in the same kind." (Coleridge)
2. <mathematics> Any character used to represent a quantity, an operation, a relation, or an abbreviation.
In crystallography, the symbol of a plane is the numerical expression which defines its position relatively to the assumed axes.
3. An abstract or compendium of faith or doctrine; a creed, or a summary of the articles of religion.
4. [Gr. Contributions] That which is thrown into a common fund; hence, an appointed or accustomed duty. "They do their work in the days of peace . . . And come to pay their symbol in a war or in a plague." (Jer. Taylor)
5. Share; allotment. "The persons who are to be judged . . . Shall all appear to receive their symbol." (Jer. Taylor)
6. <chemistry> An abbreviation standing for the name of an element and consisting of the initial letter of the Latin or new Latin name, or sometimes of the initial letter with a following one; as, C for carbon, Na for sodium (Natrium), Fe for iron (Ferrum), Sn for tin (Stannum), Sb for antimony (Stibium), etc. See the list of names and symbols under Element.
In pure and organic chemistry there are symbols not only for the elements, but also for their grouping in formulas, radicals, or residues, as evidenced by their composition, reactions, synthesis, etc. See the diagram of Benzene nucleus, under Benzene.
Synonym: Emblem, figure, type. See Emblem.
Origin: L. Symbolus, symbolum, Gr. A sign by which one knows or infers a thing, from to throw or put together, to compare; with + to throw: cf. F. Symbole. Cf. Emblem, Parable.

genetic code <molecular biology> Relationship between the sequence of bases in nucleic acid and the order of amino acids in the polypeptide synthesised from it. A sequence of three nucleic acid bases (a triplet) acts as a codeword (codon) for one amino acid.
(18 Nov 1997)
code The genetic code is the correspondence between the triplet of bases in DNA with the amino acids. The discovery of the genetic code clearly ranks as one of the premiere events of what has been called the Golden Age of Biology (and Medicine).

degenerate code <molecular biology> The fact that in most cases in the genetic code used by all life on Earth, one particular amino acid is specified by more than one three-base combination of the four nitrogenous bases (called a codon).
There are enough different codons to specify 64 different amino acids, but there are in actuality only 20 amino acids (and three stop codons) used in the making of proteins.
(09 Oct 1997)
International Code of Zoological Nomenclature <zoology> An Authoritative document containing a system of rules and recommendations to be followed in giving a scientific name to an animal or animal group. Adopted by the International Congresses of Zoology and Administered by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. The most recent version of the Code, adopted in principle by the 20th General Assembly of the International Union of Biological Sciences at Helsinki in 1979, was approved by the ICZN late in 1983. With minor exceptions it retains the same format as the first two editions. Minor amendments for immediate incorporation are published in Bulletin Zoological Nomenclature as Declarations to remain in force until ratified or rejected by future congresses.

gel diffusion precipitin tests in two dimensions Precipitin test's made in a layer of agar that permits radial diffusion, in both of the horizontal dimensions, of one or both reactants. Double (gel) diffusion in two dimensions (Ouchterlony test, technique, or method) incorporates antigen and antibody solutions placed in separate wells in a sheet of plain agar, permitting radial diffusion of both reactants; this method is widely used to determine antigenic relationships; the bands of precipitate that form where the reactants meet in optimal concentration are of three patterns, referred to as reaction of identity, reaction of partial identity (cross-reaction), and reaction of nonidentity.

Master's two-step exercise test An early and long-used exercise challenge to identify ischemic heart disease using a pair of nine inch steps with a platform on top, the number of trips by the patient arbitrarily chosen and related to age and body weight.
See: two-step exercise test.
Synonym: Master's two-step exercise test.
