tuberculoid l. the relatively benign, least infectious, and usually self-limited polar type of leprosy in which, as a result of well-developed cell-mediated immunity to Mycobacterium leprae, acid-fast bacilli usually cannot be identified in the lesions. It is characterized by early severe damage to the nerves and by the presence of one to a few typically asymmetric, sharply defined, anesthetic, hypopigmented or erythematous macules or plaques with elevated borders and dry, rough surfaces (leprids).
