1. an organic amine proton acceptor, used to make buffer solutions (see TRIS buffer, under buffer. 2. [USP] an aqueous preparation of tromethamine used intravenously as an alkalizer for the correction of metabolic acidosis. Called also tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS or THAM).
