| trochanter | 1. <anatomy> One of two processes near the head of the femur, the outer being called the great trochanter, and the inner the small trochanter. 2. <zoology> The third joint of the leg of an insect, or the second when the trochantine is united with the coxa. Origin: NL, fr. Gr. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| trochanter major | A strong process at the proximal and lateral part of the shaft of the femur, overhanging the root of the neck; it gives attachment to the gluteus medius and minimus, piriformis, obturator internus and externus, and gemelli muscles. Synonym: trochanter major. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanter minor | A pyramidal process projecting from the medial and proximal part of the shaft of the femur at the line of junction of the shaft and the neck; it receives the insertion of the psoas major and iliacus (iliopsoas) muscles. Synonym: trochanter minor, small trochanter, trochantin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanter reflex | Contraction of the adductor muscles of the thigh elicited by a tap on the trochanter. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanter tertius | The point of insertion on the upper portion of the shaft of the femur of the greater part of the gluteus maximus muscle; when markedly developed this tuberosity is called the third trochanter. Synonym: trochanter tertius, tuberositas glutea, crista glutea, gluteal crest, gluteal ridge. (05 Mar 2000) |

| trochanteric bursa | <anatomy> The bursa between the greater trochanter of the femur and the skin. Synonym: bursa subcutanea trochanterica. A multilocular bursa between the gluteus maximus muscle and the greater trochanter of the femur. Synonym: bursa trochanterica musculi glutei maximi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanteric bursitis | Inflammation of one of the trochanteric bursae of the horse, and a common cause of hip lameness. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanteric crest | The rounded ridge that connects the greater and lesser trochanters of the femur posteriorly and marks the junction of the neck and shaft of the bone. Synonym: crista intertrochanterica, trochanteric crest. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanteric fossa | A depression at the root of the neck of the femur beneath the curved tip of the great trochanter; it gives attachment to the tendon of the obturator externus. Synonym: fossa trochanterica, digital fossa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanteric syndrome | <syndrome> Tendonitis and bursitis around the trochanter major. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochanterplasty | Plastic surgery of the trochanters and neck of the femur. Origin: trochanter + G. Plastos, formed (05 Mar 2000) |
| greater trochanter | A strong process at the proximal and lateral part of the shaft of the femur, overhanging the root of the neck; it gives attachment to the gluteus medius and minimus, piriformis, obturator internus and externus, and gemelli muscles. Synonym: trochanter major. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| small trochanter | A pyramidal process projecting from the medial and proximal part of the shaft of the femur at the line of junction of the shaft and the neck; it receives the insertion of the psoas major and iliacus (iliopsoas) muscles. Synonym: trochanter minor, small trochanter, trochantin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| third trochanter | An occasional process at the proximal end of the lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur, about on a level with the lesser trochanter, giving insertion to the greater part of the gluteus maximus muscle. See: gluteal tuberosity. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lesser trochanter | A pyramidal process projecting from the medial and proximal part of the shaft of the femur at the line of junction of the shaft and the neck; it receives the insertion of the psoas major and iliacus (iliopsoas) muscles. Synonym: trochanter minor, small trochanter, trochantin. (05 Mar 2000) |

The trochanter is a bony bump on the femur (the thigh bone) to which large muscles are attached. TRO?ON (pronounced TROH-oh-don) Troodon was a very smart, human-sized, meat-eating theropod dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period, about 76 to 70 million years ago. Fossils of Troodon have been found in Montana, Wyoming (USA) and Alberta (Canada). The type species is T. formosus.
