an order of chiefly parasitic protozoa (superorder Parabasalidea, class Zoomastigophora), typically characterized by the presence of karyomastigonts with four to six flagella, one of which is recurrent or free or has a proximal segment or the entire length adherent to the body surface; an undulating membrane (if present) associated with adherent segments of recurrent flagellum; and a pelta and noncontractile axostyle in each mastigont. Representative genera include Dientamoeba, Histomonas, Monocercomonas, and Trichomonas.
