| isoelectric focusing | <technique> Electrophoresis in a stabilised pH gradient. High resolution method for separating molecules, especially proteins, that carry both positive and negative charges. Molecules migrate to the pH corresponding to their isoelectric point. The gradient is produced by electrophoresis of amphiphiles, heterogenous molecules giving a continuum of isoelectric points. Resolution is determined by the number of amphiphile species and the evenness of distribution of their isoelectric points. (18 Nov 1997) |

| dynamic focusing | <microscopy> An automatic focusing adjustment of the electron beam in high-quality cathode-ray or video image pickup tubes. The beam is made to land with the properly shaped minimum-sized spot regardless of its position in the raster scan (05 Aug 1998) |
| focusing device | <microscopy> A device which effectively increases the angular aperture of the electron beam illuminating the object, rendering the focus more critical. (05 Aug 1998) |
| focusing glass | <microscopy> A hand magnifier, used at the focal plane of a camera, usually with the ground glass removed. Its purpose is to examine the image for critical focus. It is, as a rule, a low-power magnifier so mounted that it is in focus when supported on a piece of clear glass at the focal plane of the cam- era, for studying the image. It operates equally well on the aerial image. (05 Aug 1998) |
| focusing magnifier | <microscopy> A low-power light microscope, telescope, or simple lens used to observe the electron image formed on a fluorescent screen. (05 Aug 1998) |
| isoelectric | Of equal electrical potential. Compare: isoelectric point. Synonym: isopotential. Isoelectric focusing, electrophoresis of small molecules or macromolecules in a pH gradient. (05 Mar 2000) |
| isoelectric line | The baseline of the electrocardiogram. (05 Mar 2000) |
| isoelectric period | The period occurring in the electrocardiogram between the end of the S wave and the beginning of the T wave during which electrical forces are acting in directions such as to neutralise each other so that there is no difference in potential under the two electrodes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| isoelectric point | <biochemistry> The pH at which a protein carries no net charge. Below the isoelectric point proteins carry a net positive charge, above it a net negative charge. Due to a preponderance of weakly acid residues in almost all proteins, they are nearly all negatively charged at neutral pH. The isoelectric point is of significance in protein purification because it is the pH at which solubility is often minimal and at which mobility in an electrofocusing system is zero (and therefore the point at which the protein will accumulate). (18 Nov 1997) |
| isoelectric zone | The range of H-ion concentration (pH) over which isoelectric precipitation occurs. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cerebral ischemia, transient | Nonconvulsive, reversible, focal neurologic deficits lasting minutes up to about 24 hours, resulting mainly from arteriosclerosis, emboli, or hypertensive episodes. (12 Dec 1998) |
| transient | 1. Short-lived; passing; not permanent; said of a disease or an attack. 2. A short-lived cardiac sound having little duration (less than 0.12 second) as distinct from a murmur; e.g., first, second, third, and fourth heart sounds, clicks, and opening snaps. Origin: L. Transeo, pres. P. Transiens, to cross over (05 Mar 2000) |
| transient acantholytic dermatosis | A pruritic papular eruption, with histologic suprabasal acantholysis, of the chest, with scattered lesions of the back and lateral aspects of the extremities, lasting from a few weeks to several months; seen predominantly in males over 40. Synonym: Grover's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transient agammaglobulinaemia | A type of primary immunodeficiency that occurs in infants of both sexes, usually before the sixth month of life, probably resulting from immaturity of lymphoid tissue. Synonym: transient agammaglobulinaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transient albuminuria | Albuminuria of a temporary or short-lived nature. (05 Mar 2000) |
