A planar section of mineral material 30 microns thick, attached to a glass slide and commonly covered with a cover slip. Non-opaque minerals will allow passage of light at a thickness of 30 microns, allowing transmitted-light microscopy of the sample.

made by grinding down a slice of rock which has been glued to a glass slide until it reaches a thickness of about 0.03mm (30 microns).
