| temporal sensing | <technique> Mechanism of gradient sensing in which the value of some environmental property is compared with the value at some previous time, the cell having moved position between the two samplings. Initial movement is random, until the second observation is made the gradient cannot be detected. See spatial and pseudospatial sensing mechanisms. Bacterial chemotaxis (so called) is based on this mechanism. (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|
| pseudospatial gradient sensing | <cell biology> Mechanism for sensing a gradient of a diffusible chemical in which the cell sends protrusions out at random, up gradient protrusions are stabilised by positive feedback (because receptor occupancy is rising with time) and others are transitory because of adaptation. Possibly the mechanism by which neutrophils sense chemotactic gradients. (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|---|
| spatial sensing | Mechanism of sensing a gradient in which the signal is compared at different points on the cell surface and cell movement directed accordingly. Translocation of all or part of the cell is not required. See: temporal gradient sensing, pseudospatial gradient sensing. (18 Nov 1997) |

| articular fossa of temporal bone | A deep hollow in the squamous portion of the temporal bone at the root of the zygoma, in which rests the condyle of the mandible. Synonym: cavitas glenoidalis, fossa mandibularis, articular fossa of temporal bone, glenoid cavity, glenoid fossa, glenoid surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
| articular surface of temporal bone | The smooth portion of the mandibular articular fossa and eminence of the temporal bone that articulates with the disk of the temporomandibular joint. Synonym: facies articularis ossis temporalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| articular tubercle of temporal bone | Articular eminence of the temporal bone which bounds the mandibular fossa anteriorly; it forms the anterior root of the zygomatic process; it is enclosed by the articular capsule of the temporomandibular joint with the articular fossa; the head of the mandible (and intervening articular disc) move onto the articular tubercle to allow full depression of mandible (opening of mouth). Synonym: tuberculum articulare ossis temporalis, articular eminence of temporal bone, eminentia articularis ossis temporalis, tuber zygomaticum. (05 Mar 2000) |

| petrous part of temporal bone | The part of the temporal bone that contains the structures of the inner ear and the second part of the internal carotid artery; in antenatal life it appears as a separate ossification centre. Synonym: pars petrosa ossis temporalis, periotic bone, petrosal bone, petrous pyramid. (05 Mar 2000) |
