tau <radiobiology> Label generally used to represent confinement time
(09 Oct 1997)
Tau protein <cell biology> Protein (60-70 kD) that co purifies with tubulin through cycles of assembly and disassembly and the first microtubule associated protein to be characterised. Tau proteins are a family made by alternative splicing of a single gene. It has tandem repeats of a tubulin binding domain and promotes tubulin assembly. Although tau proteins are found in all cells they are major components of neurons where they are predominantly associated with microtubules of the axon.
See: MAPs.
(18 Nov 1997)
tau proteins One of the two major classes of microtubule-associated proteins isolated from the brain. The proteins have two domains: one that binds to microtubules and a second that binds to other cell components. By binding to several unpolymerised tubulin molecules simultaneously, tau proteins speed up the nucleation process in tubulin polymerization. Chemically modified tau proteins also appear to be involved in the formation and/or composition of the neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads found in alzheimer disease.

taurine <amino acid> Is one of the most abundant amino acids in the body. It is found in the central nervous system, skeletal muscle and is very concentrated in the brain and heart. It is synthesised from the amino acids methionine and cysteine, in conjunction with vitamin B6. Animal protein is a good source of taurine, as it is not found in vegetable protein. Vegetarians with an unbalanced protein intake and therefore deficient in methionine or cysteine may have difficulty manufacturing taurine. Dietary intake is thought to be more important in women as the female hormone oestradiol depresses the formation of taurine in the liver. Taurine seems to inhibit and modulate neurotransmitters in the brain.
(04 Nov 1997)
taurine dehydrogenase <enzyme> Catalyses the dehydrogenation of taurine with the formation of sulfoacetaldehyde, ammonia and a reduced receptor; nature of receptor is not known

  • tau Proteins - »õâ Microtubule-associated proteins that are mainly expressed in neurons. Tau proteins constitute several isoforms and play an important role in the assembly of tubulin monomers into microtubules and in maintaining the cytoskeleton and axonal transport. Aggregation of specific sets of tau proteins in filamentous inclusions is the common feature of intraneuronal and glial fibrillar lesions (NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES; NEUROPIL THREADS) in numerous neurodegenerative disorders (ALZHEIMER DISEASE; TAUOPATHIES).
