The avoidance of certain words or sounds for ritual or analogous reasons. In ancient China, the personal names of one's father and one's ruler were taboo, and various substitutions were used instead. The social and situational specifics of this practice have not been carefully studied, but even as presently understood, taboo avoidance can be a help in dating texts, or certain manuscript copies of texts.
