greater superficial petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The parasympathetic root of the pterygopalatine ganglion; a branch from the genu of the facial nerve exiting via the hiatus of the facial canal and running in a groove on the anterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone beside the foramen lacerum to join the deep petrosal nerve, thus forming the nerve of the pterygoid canal, which passes through the pterygoid canal to reach the pterygopalatine ganglion.
Synonym: nervus petrosus major, greater petrosal nerve.

lesser superficial petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The parasympathetic root of the otic ganglion, derived from the tympanic plexus; it leaves the tympanic cavity through the canal for the lesser petrosal nerve and passes within the cranium to the sphenopetrosal fissure, or to the foramen ovale, or to the petrosal foramen through which it descends to reach the otic ganglion; conveys presynaptic parasympathetic fibres from the glossopharyngeal nerve concerned with secretomotor innervation of the perotid gland.
Synonym: nervus petrosus minor, lesser petrosal nerve.

groove of greater petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The groove on the anterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone that lodges the greater petrosal nerve.
Synonym: sulcus nervi petrosi majoris.
(05 Mar 2000)
groove of lesser petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The groove on the anterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone that accommodates the lesser petrosal nerve in its course to the otic ganglion.
Synonym: sulcus nervi petrosi minoris.
(05 Mar 2000)
hiatus of canal for greater petrosal nerve The opening on the anterior aspect of the petrous part of the temporal bone which leads to the facial canal and gives passage to the greater petrosal nerve.
Synonym: hiatus canalis nervi petrosi majoris, fallopian hiatus, Ferrein's foramen, hiatus canalis facialis, hiatus of canal for greater petrosal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
hiatus of canal of lesser petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The small opening in the petrous bone lateral to the hiatus of facial canal that gives passage to the lesser petrosal nerve.
Synonym: hiatus canalis nervi petrosi minoris, Arnold's canal, canalis nervi petrosi superficialis minoris.

small deep petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> One of two sympathetic branches from the internal carotid plexus to the tympanic plexus.
Synonym: nervus caroticotympanicus, small deep petrosal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
deep petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The deep petrosal branch of the internal carotid plexus, which joins the greater petrosal nerve at the entrance of the pterygoid canal to provide postsynaptic fibres to nerve of the pterygoid canal.
Synonym: nervus petrosus profundus.
(05 Mar 2000)
lesser petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The parasympathetic root of the otic ganglion, derived from the tympanic plexus; it leaves the tympanic cavity through the canal for the lesser petrosal nerve and passes within the cranium to the sphenopetrosal fissure, or to the foramen ovale, or to the petrosal foramen through which it descends to reach the otic ganglion; conveys presynaptic parasympathetic fibres from the glossopharyngeal nerve concerned with secretomotor innervation of the perotid gland.
Synonym: nervus petrosus minor, lesser petrosal nerve.

superficial branch of the lateral plantar nerve <anatomy, nerve> Mostly cutaneous branch to skin of small and lateral half of fourth toes and lateral side of sole of foot, but also supplies the flexor digiti minimi brevis muscle and the most lateral dorsal and plantar interosseous muscles.
Synonym: ramus superficialis nervi plantaris lateralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
superficial branch of the radial nerve <anatomy, nerve> Cutaneous terminal branch (with deep branch) which runs under cover of brachioradialis muscle to wrist, then supplies skin of proximal portion of the dorsal aspects of thumb, index, middle and lateral half of ring fingers and the portion of the dorsum of the hand located proximally.
Synonym: ramus superficialis nervi radialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
superficial branch of the ulnar nerve <anatomy, nerve> Branch supplying skin of palmar aspect of little and medial half of ring fingers, the portion of the palm proximal to them and the palmaris brevis muscle.
Synonym: ramus superficialis nervi ulnaris.
