Because there can be only one householder per household, there can be only one family. So "subfamily" was created to take care of the not-uncommon situation of multiple generations in one household. A subfamily is a married couple with or without children or a single parent with one or more children living in a household and related to the householder. This might be, for instance, a divorced mother who moves back into her parents' home with her children.
