| Giardia intestinalis | A species of parasitic protozoa that attaches itself to the intestinal mucosa and feeds on mucous secretions. The organism is roughly pear-shaped and motility is somewhat erratic, with a slow oscillation about the long axis. Considered for many years to be non-pathogenic and often found in completely asymptomatic individuals, there is presently strong evidence for its pathogenic potential. (12 Dec 1998) |

| ciona intestinalis | The only species of a cosmopolitan ascidian. It is useful as a research animal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis | A condition characterised by the presence of thin-walled, gas-containing cysts in the wall of the intestines. The lesions may be subserosal or submucosal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pneumatosis intestinalis | <radiology> Multiple thin-walled, non-communicating, gas-filled cysts located in subserosa with or without submucosa with normal mucosa and muscularis, primary pneumatosis intestinalis (15%), secondary pneumatosis intestinalis (85%), ischemia, necrotizing enterocolitis, mesenteric vascular disease, trauma (sigmoidoscopy, biopsy, BE, postsurgical anastomosis), infection (primary infection, parasites, perforated jejunal tic), inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease, connective tissue disease (especially scleroderma), Whipple disease, pulmonary disease (COPD, artificial ventilation), colonic obstruction (air dissecting distally) see: pneumatosis cystoides (12 Dec 1998) |
| mycosis intestinalis | Gastroenteric form of anthrax, the symptoms of which are those of gastroenteritis followed by toxaemia and general depression. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tonsilla intestinalis | See: Peyer's patches. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies intestinalis uteri | The posterosuperior surface of the uterus with which loops of intestine come in contact. Synonym: facies intestinalis uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Lamblia intestinalis | Old term for Giardia lamblia, though still frequently used, especially by protozoologists in the former Soviet Union. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lipodystrophia intestinalis | An obsolete term for Whipple's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aortic stenosis | Progressive narrowing of the aortic valve resulting in the obstructed passage of blood from the left ventricle into the aorta. Causes for aortic stenosis include rheumatic fever, congenital and idiopathic sclerosis. Chronic stenosis can lead to left ventricular enlargement and congestive heart failure. (27 Sep 1997) |
| aortic valve stenosis | Narrowing of the orifice of the aortic valve or of the supravalular or subvalvular regions. (12 Dec 1998) |
| aqueductal stenosis | <radiology> most common cause of congenital hydrocephalus (43%), aqueduct develops about the 6th week of gestation, M:F = 2:1, other congenital anomalies (16%): thumb deformities, prognosis: 11-30% mortality aetiology: infectious (50%): toxoplasmosis, CMV, syphillis, mumps, influenza, developmental: forking, narrowing, transverse septum (X-linked recessive), neoplastic (extremely rare): glioma, pinealoma, meningioma (12 Dec 1998) |
| buttonhole stenosis | Extreme narrowing, usually of the mitral valve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| calcific nodular aortic stenosis | Most common type of aortic stenosis, occurring usually in elderly men, in which the cusps contain calcified fibrous nodules on both surfaces; the causes include rheumatic fever, atherosclerosis, age-related degeneration, and congenitally bicuspid aortic valve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| valvular aortic stenosis | <radiology> Secondary to fusion of commisures between cusps types: bicuspid/unicuspid (95%): in 1-2% of population; M>F; commonly associated with coarctation, tricuspid (5%), dysplastic thickened aortic cusps in infants with crtical aortic stenosis: may stimulate neonatal sepsis, associated with L-R shunts (atrial septal defect, VSD), marked CMG (thickened wall of LV), pulmonary venous hypertension, congestive heart failure child/adult: LV configuration with normal heart size, postenotic dilatation, calcified valve (60% of patients greater than24 y.o.) see: aortic stenosis (12 Dec 1998) |
