The symptoms must cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning. In contrast to FACTITIOUS DISORDERS and MALINGERING, the physical symptoms are not under voluntary control. (APA, DSM-IV)
Synonyms : Somatization Disorders, Somatoform Disorder, Syndrome, Briquet
  • Somatomedins - »õâ Insulin-like polypeptides made by the liver and some fibroblasts and released into the blood when stimulated by SOMATOTROPIN. They cause sulfate incorporation into collagen, RNA, and DNA synthesis, which are prerequisites to cell division and growth of the organism.
Synonyms : Insulin Like Growth Factors, Somatomedin, Factor, Sulfation, Factors, Insulin-Like Growth, Growth Factors, Insulin-Like
  • Somatosensory Cortex - »õâ Area of the parietal lobe concerned with receiving general sensations. It lies posterior to the central sulcus.
    Synonyms : Cortex, Somatosensory
  • Somatosensory Disorders - »õâ Disorders of sensory information received from superficial and deep regions of the body. The somatosensory system conveys neural impulses which pertain to proprioception, tactile sensation, thermal sensation, pressure sensation, and pain. PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DISEASES; SPINAL CORD DISEASES; and BRAIN DISEASES may be associated with impaired or abnormal somatic sensation.
Synonyms : Impairment, Light Touch Sensation, Light Touch Sensation Impairment, Pain Sensation Diminished, Pinprick Sensation Diminished, Position Sense Disorders, Somatic Sensation Disorders, Diminished, Pain Sensation, Diminished, Pinprick Sensation
  • Somatostatin - »õâ A 14-amino acid peptide named for its ability to inhibit pituitary GROWTH HORMONE release, also called somatotropin release-inhibiting factor. It is expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the gut, and other organs. SRIF can also inhibit the release of THYROID-STIMULATING HORMONE; PROLACTIN; INSULIN; and GLUCAGON besides acting as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. In a number of species including humans, there is an additional form of somatostatin, SRIF-28 with a 14-amino acid extension at the N-terminal.
Synonyms : SRIH-14, Somatofalk, Somatostatin, Cyclic, Somatotropin Release-Inhibiting Factor, Stilamin, Somatostatin 14, Somatotropin Release Inhibiting Factor, Somatotropin Release Inhibiting Hormone
